Normal Hair Loss
Male and female alike, we all lose a certain amount of hair each day of our lives. Shocked? Don't be, it is part of the normal hair cycle. On average, anywhere from 70 to 100 strands hair loss is the daily norm. Since the average scalp holds easily more than 100,000 follicles, this loss is barely noticeable, and in it's cycle, is offset by new regrowth in healthy scalps.
This cycle has been identified to occur in three phases. The initial growth period, called the anagen phase, lasts generally from two to five years. This growth phase is terminated by extreme interruption between the hair shaft and nourishing papilla. This interruption lasts only a few days and is known as the catagen phase. The following three to six months is known as the telogen phase, in which, the hair rests, held only in place by mechanical forces until eventually dislodged. Thus, the cycle of growth begins again.
Male Pattern Baldness
The most common type of hair loss is hereditary male pattern baldness; 25% of all men under 30 and two thirds of
men over 40 experience it (Health News, University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine, Vol. 6, #4). This type of hair loss is irreversible and can onset as early as teen age years to late middle age. Normally, MPB starts to thin on the top of the head and/or the hairline recedes further and further back towards the crown. Fewer cases of MPB will experience more pronounced loss near the crown.

Those who have an hereditary predisposition of blood supply to hair follicles being blocked by excess dihydrotestosterone (a byproduct of testosterone) are subject to this condition. There are no cures as yet, nor does it seem likely any will come in the near future. As dismal as this seems, there are alternatives.
Psycholgical Effects of Male Pattern Baldness
Taken from study of 146 balding men conducted by Thomas Cash, PhD, Professor of Clinical Psycology at Old Dominion University, Norfolk Virginia
Society places great value on hair. Balding men do suffer stress over hair loss, particularly younger, single men. The more extensive the loss, the greater the stress that is induced.
Ten most common concerns these men expressed about their hair loss were:
- I felt frustrated or helpless about my hair loss;
- I have less self-confidence than before;
- I feel self-conscious about my looks;
- I feel older, I look older than I am;
- I think I am not as attractive as I used to be;
- I seek reassurance about my looks;
- I feel frustrated and helpless about my hair loss;
- I worry about how much hair I am going to lose;
- I am conscious of how others react to me; and,
- I feel sensitive to personal criticism.
Alopecia Areata/Totalis
Alopecia Areata is a patchy hair loss that occurs with great unpredictability. It neams hair will fall from certain parts of the head in one, two, three or more locations. Alopecia Totalis is a total or complete hair loss which may extend to body hair, eyelashes, etcetera. In either case, the hair may commence regrowth only to be lost again at a later date. Little is known of these disorders. Theories run from hereditary to the immunological. Regardless of which theory is subscribed to, there is at this time no cure that is viable long term. Advanced cosmetic solutions for men, women, and children suffering from this malady provide the best alternatives.
Seborrhea
Seborrhea is an increased build up of oil, or sebum on the scalp or other hair-bearing areas of the body. An excessive amount of the male hormone is responsible for this condition, as well as diet and other external factors. Treatments are readily available to control this condition in the form of reducing fat in one's diet, lotions to inhibit liquid formations in the gland as well as tar-based shampoos. Many tall claims of hair restoration formulas or shampoos use this simple disorder to back up claims that their "potions" can restore hair. In most cases of hair loss, particularly those in men, Seborrhea is only secondary to and exacerbates Male Pattern Baldness. Therefore, lotions and potions are generally, of no use. A healthy diet will do more to enhance health of hair and scalp than any topical lotion.
Dandruff
Dandruff has the appearance of white, or grey scales that accumulate on the scalp
Environmental Factors
Environment certainly affects our hair. There are both physical and chemical influences affecting hair. The common physical influences range from improper hair brushing to tension on the hair, ie. braiding. As well as burns which destroy skin and follicles, an exposure to radiation either from life saving treatments such as chemotherapy, to overexposure due to extensive outdoor exposure to harmful uv rays. Chemical influences work promarily through ingestion of certain chemicals. Some medications do have the distinct side effect of hair loss. Alternative medicines may be availabe to allievate this problem. Consult your physician if you have a concern
The Role of Diet in Hair Loss
Weight loss is as fadish as excessive consumption of vitamins is today. Young people very often lose hair from acute voluntary starvation. When this occurs, hair growns thinner and more fragile.
A well-balanced diet, along with a quality multi-purpose vitamin and a good psychological disposition will promote healthy hair growth and prevent hair loss which is not of normal or genetic origin. The best diet or supplements for hair arrive from the inside of the body as opposed to external treatments.
Today, an individuals natural hair is no longer the principle factor in creating a fabulous hairstyle.
